03 Engine Swap

The Overhauled engine originally from Class 04 D2271 has been fitted to Class 03 D2133 at the West Somerset Railway Association-owned Williton Shed at the West Somerset Railway. The shunter was later towed to Minehead by Class 33 D6575 on October 5. The engine, which has cost more than £25,000 to be overhauled by Gardner Marine, has also had a small environmental upgrade to reduce emissions. This swap will allow the old but serviceable engine from D2133 to be fitted into Class 04, D2271, which has been standing virtually derelict at Minehead since suffering a major gearbox failure at Williton. It is good fortune that Class 03s and Class 04s use the same Gardner 8L3 engine.
