Rocks are pretty mundane subjects. However, keeping the rock ballast portion of thousands of miles of track in place and functioning is challenging. New equipment and techniques are helping railroads meet that challenge. From Global Positioning Systems to advanced electric motors, suppliers are adapting the technology to one of the most fundamental areas of railroading.
