摘要

One of my duties as a junior public relations officer at the old North Western was to deal with people whose knowledge of the railroad industry was nonexistent or stilted. I've led many young and some not-so-young journalists by the hand through the intricacies of railroading. Some were willing to learn and some had pre-conceived attitudes that were hard to deal with. For example, once I was trying to explain a delay in the suburban service that occurred when one of the trains lost its air. Before I could explain how air brakes worked, the reporter asked, "You mean from the tires?"
