By increasing axle loads, railroads reduce the number of cars and trains needed for the same tonnage, thus making more-efficient use of both equipment and manpower. At the same time, HAL increases demands on track components, increasing maintenance and renewal costs.rnAt the Transportation Technology Center, Inc., the objective at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing is to investigate performance of improved track components for 315,000-pound cars. The information is also applicable to 286,000-pound cars now commonly in service.
