I have recently returned from a trip to Washington, D.C, for the railroad industry's annual Railroad Day on Capitol Hill. This event was again a powerful and useful experience. Hundreds of railroad industry participants took the opportunity to make our voices heard by those who write the laws affecting rail service in this country. We argued for the enactment of the Class 1-focused investment tax credit, pushed the extension of the existing short line railroad tax credit, argued against increased economic regulation of freight railroads, opposed the rail antitrust bill, supported increased passenger rail investment and made the case that an increasing focus on environmental concerns should shift government policy to more aggressively support the rail industry.rnThis year's Railroad Day on the Hill attendees walked away with a positive experience and confidence in our political process, as well as increased familiarity with their representatives in Congress.
