Flange-bearing frogs are being implemented in North American freight railway tracks for a variety of applications. Flange-bearing frogs have proven to be a safe, reliable and an economic alternative to conventional tread-bearing frogs. This is especially true for heavy-axle-load operations, where conventional frogs can generate high-dynamic loads. Transportation Technology Center, Inc., a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads, has assisted the railroads in implementing flange-bearing frogs by conducting the feasibility and proof of concept tests at its laboratory and field test facilities in Pueblo, Colo.
