1. The MAPS-SFT system produced RNT results that were within 8°F of RNT values calculated from strain gauges during HTL field tests. TTCI considers the correlation with the strain gauge sensors as being a strong initial indication that MAPS-SFT is a technically-viable concept. However, additional testing is needed to fully validate the technique. The accuracy of the technique relies on the rail vertical/longitudinal residual stress relationship being adequately characterized and residual stress calibration lines being developed for the rail types being tested.
