Getting to know Denis Zilmer

Each month AREMA features one of our committee chairmen. We are pleased to announce that the January featured chairman is Denis Zilmer, chair of Committee 2 - Track Measuring Systems. AREMA: Why did you decide to choose a career in railway engineering? Zilmer: As an electrical engineer, I had always been fascinated with machine automation. I had been working for a nuclear power plant right out of college, but found the industry regulations and red tape to be stifling to my career path. I researched the region to find a company with automation engineering requirements and found Loram. Since my background is agricultural, I thought this would be a perfect fit, automating very large equipment. In 1996, when an opening occurred in the machine automation engineering department, I applied and was hired. My fancy was not so much with railroads, but with the equipment and technology used to maintain them.
