"May you live in interesting times," so says the proverb. Fuel costs are half of what they were two years ago. The pundits would have you believe that the economy is better than it has been over the past several years. We even have our first long-term surface transportation bill in roughly a decade. Yet, political uncertainty remains, as it is an election year. Threats to the existing Class 1 railroad structure loom and traffic in several key areas has been softening. For the first time in several years, the railroad industry is withdrawing from what has been several years of record capital investment.
