It is not possible to replace conventional shunting locomotives entirely, even by using dual-powered locomotives incorporating last-mile diesel. If the preconditions are right, however, the use of a dual-powered locomotive may make it possible to dispense with keeping a diesel locomotive, which makes for very considerable savings. In future, dual-powered locomotives with stronger diesel engines are going to be available on the German market. With this new, innovative generation of locomotives, it is going to be possible to use either electric or diesel power on main lines and for the same locomotive to work the first or last mile of non-electrified lines regardless of infrastructure factors and train mass. Innovations like dual-powered locomotives require the interaction of engineering, operational management and logistics to make the most out of potential operational and economic savings.%Vordergründiger Gegenstand der Arbeit sind konventionelle Streckenlokomotiven mit einem zusätzlichen Dieselaggregat (Zweikraftlokomotiven), die eine Bedienung der ersten bzw. letzten Meile auf nicht elektrifizierten Strecken ohne einen Traktionswechsel ermöglichen.
