Rail as the key to finding a solution - Alternatives to measures to extend the third runway at Schwechat Airport (Vienna)

The discussion surrounding the construction of the third runway at the airport of Vienna-Schwechat has become even more heated with the announcement of two controversial court judgments concerning matters to do with the environmental impact assessment. On 2 February 2017, the Austrian Federal Administrative Court turned down the application by the airport's operator, Flughafen Wien AG, to construct and operate a third runway. In its reasoning, the court finds that the criteria of "land consumption" and "C0_2 greenhouse gas" do constitute relevant bases for the decision.
