Continuing investment in automatic train protection is starting to pay off, according to Infrabel. Figures released by the infrastructure manager in January confirm that last year saw a significant reduction in the number of signals passed at danger for the third year in a row. Last year saw 56 SPADs on the core network, down from 75 in 2012, and 43% fewer than the 104 recorded in 2010. In more than half of all incidents the train was brought to a stand within the protective overlap, with only 29 reaching a dangerous position last year against 51 in 2010.
