Over the past decade or so, there has been a lot of talk, particularly at a political level, about the development of high speed passenger trains in the USA, as well as 'higher-speed' inter-city services running at up to 200 km/h. However, little has happened in terms of new routes, more trains or faster services. Amtrak rider-ship has been gradually increasing by about 3% a year, but rail's modal share remains well under 1%, compared with between 6% and 12% in western Europe or 30% in Japan.
