Vertical miller

Later this year, Speno International expects to start test running with a prototype rail milling train. The self-propelled twin-unit MRR600 has been designed for cyclic or preventive milling rather than the rectification of railhead faults. A pair of vertically-mounted milling heads rotate on each side of each rail, cutting the head to a predetermined profile. The two heads 'overlap' slightly along the rail centreline to give a clean top with no longitudinal facets. Very small amounts of : steel would be removed in each pass, typically between 0·1 and 03 mm. Milling speed should be at least 2 km/h.
