Indiana Rail Road marks a milestone

Indiana Rail Road Company celebrated a major milestone in its 25-year history as a regional railroad Nov. 10, officially moving its two-millionth carload of revenue freight at INRD's Senate Avenue Terminal in Indianapolis. INRD officials, including company founder, President, and CEO Tom Hoback, were on hand to mark the event. Indianapolis-based INRD says it took the company 18 years and 9 months to reach its first one million cars of revenue freight, in a span stretching from March 1986 to December 2004. But carload No. 2 million moved just six years and 11 months later. INRD, which posted a 64% operating ratio as of third-quarter 2011, hauls a variety of industrial and manufactured consumer products for companies in central and soudiwestern Indiana and central Illinois. One of its largest customers is Peabody Energy, which is expected to ship over six million tons of high-BTUcontent coal this year, growing to 12 million tons by 2015. INRD has invested more than $125 million in its physical plant since 1986.
