MIDYEAR REPORT IN STARK CONTRAST

The railroad industry would probably prefer to forget 2016, the year when traffic took a nosedive, along with the level of civility in politics-not that politics sees much civility. This year is turning out to be a very different story. While not much has changed politically (some would suggest it's crazier than ever), and Washington is stalled in gridlock and partisanship, the railroads are gradually climbing out of a slump. Traffic is coming back, and freight car orders-the bellwether of a healthy industry, just as rail freight traffic is a bellwether of the economy-appear to be recovering.
