Along the Railroad: A North American Rail Journey 1958-1978

I bought my first railroad book in 1958, when I was eleven years old. I was summering with my grandparents on Cape Cod, and found it in The Compass Rose bookshop in Orleans. It was Highball: A Pageant of Trains by Lucius Beebe. It transformed me from a Lionel kid at Christmas into a serious railfan. Beebe's elegant prose, combined with wonderful black and white photographs, told me stories of trains and places that were well known, as well as many of which I had never heard. I read it over and over, not only that summer, but throughout the years since. I still have that copy in my library.
