Researchers hope several enhanced features on a new turnout will reduce maintenance costs while boosting performance. In an effort to reduce curving forces at the wheel/rail interface, North American railroads are implementing top-of-rail friction control using wayside and mobile-based systems. As TOR friction control technologies are relatively new, developments in application techniques and friction control materials continue to evolve with resulting improved performance and subsequent benefits. Given that most TOR friction control materials are invisible once applied, implementation and deployment guidelines are essential to ensure savings are achieved.
