What is it about model railroading that compels so many of us to create in miniature the trackside scenes we have come to know and love? My personal journey along the rails began as I was growing up in the lower Hudson Valley town of Haverstraw, New York, along the New York Central's West Shore line. Memories of southbound freights climbing the grade out of town left a lasting impression on me. I can still see the expression of the brakeman's face as he peered out the window of that faded green caboose. Years later, my interest in railfanning and photography came to life, as did a renewed interest in HO scale model railroading. Having photographed a great deal across the Northeast in the late eighties, I became a fan of the New York and New England rail scene.
