Building a mine ventilation house

For a long time I wanted to model a freelanced railroad based in the anthracite region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. I was fascinated by the amount of activity surrounding that area's coal mining towns during the peak industry years of the first half of the 20th century. As I began to plan the layout, I decided that my HO scale Wyoming Valley Railroad would connect with a well-known prototype, the Lehigh Valley Railroad. It also stood to reason that if my railroad was going to haul coal, I needed to have a coal mine on the layout.
