The 1888 completion of the electrically powered Richmond Union Passenger Railway, using Frank Sprague's electrical collection and distribution system, heralded a revolution in intercity transportation. Electric streetcars were inexpensive to operate, safe, clean, quiet and fast when compared to either horse or steam drawn vehicles of the day. They heralded the latest in technology and innovation into the turn of the century world.
