This is a relatively easy brass project suitable for a newbie or a veteran. The techniques I present can be applied to other projects as well. If you want to try your hand at brass scratchbuilding, this would be a good start. I added a two-track tunnel between my train room and shop area. Therefore, I needed a telltale to protect my brakemen from the low-clearance tunnel portal. A tell-tale, also called a bridge warning or "hobo pole," is a lineside structure supporting a series of vertical ropes over the tracks to alert a person on the car roof that they are approaching a low-clearance tunnel, structure, or bridge. Tell-tales are typically placed 100-300 feet before the obstruction and are appropriate on lay- outs with low-clearance situations dating before 1970.
