Love them or loathe them, Pacers have been part of the railway scene for over 40 years. Their demise has been promised for a while, but in 2020 the final curtain will be drawn for network operation of these units - although no doubt some will continue to be 'enjoyed' on heritage lines for many years to come. If nothing else, they have been colourful ambassadors for the rail industry as these images testify. 1. The original idea for the Pacers was that they would work local duties, and so the adoption of appropriate Passenger Transport Executive liveries made sense. Class 143 units have worked mainly in the north east of England, and in South Wales and the West Country.
