One '91'... two fatal crashes

There was nothing remarkable about the 23rd Class 91 built at Crewe Works. Released on September 181990, 91023 was merely part of a £35 million order that had been placed more than four years earlier for 31 electric locomotives (an option for a further 25 wasn't taken up). Yet less than 11 years into its career, the locomotive featured in two fatal accidents. One would change the history of the privatised railway, the other sadly killed ten people. Just like its classmates, 91023 was designed for 140mph running (it never did). It was also the intention that it could haul Sleeper trains (it never did) as well as overnight parcels (it never did).
