Shadow Transport Secretary Andy McDonald criticised the January fares increase, claiming the Government is "not serious" about supporting public transport or tackling climate change, road congestion and air quality. He said that rail fares in Germany were cut by 10% on December 31, and that Labour had pledged a 33% cut to encourage modal shift. "Following years of broken promises and cuts to investment and services, passengers are once again paying more for less under the Tories," he said. Campaign group Railfuture said the 2.7% average fare rise on January 2 heralded "another decade of misery for rail passengers".
