The tunnel collapse that claimed two lives

In March 1979, work was in hand to lower the tracks through Penmanshiel Tunnel, in order to increase the loading gauge for larger international containers on the East Coast Main Line. Similar improvements had already been completed further south in Stoke and Peascliffe tunnels (near Grantham), before work commenced within the 133-year-old tunnel bore at Penmanshiel, some 18 miles north west of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
