Most European railways are still losing market share to the roads in the freight sector. The reasons for this are many and various. One of the most frequently cited, over and above the rail mode's lack of flexibility, is the dismal lack of innovation on the part of established railway companies. To offset the disadvantages inherent in the rail system by comparison with the roads, it is vital that railway companies should market innovative and intelligent logistics solutions.
