Many South American nations have long recognized the benefits of creating transportation links between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They have also sought access to Pacific ports because those ports might be better located relative to trade routes than ports on the Atlantic. In many cases, however, the Andes Mountains, which run the entire length of the continent along its western side, have made these objectives difficult to achieve.
