Never before have freight transport markets undergone restructuring in terms of 1. competitive conditions 2. demands made on industry, trade and consumers, and 3. technologies as rapidly, thoroughly and unpredictably as they are at present. The transport horizons of freight markets are being steadily pushed further back. Lower trade barriers are favouring the free exchange of goods on international and ultimately global sales markets. Aided by diminishing obstacles to international investment, industrial corporations are utilising international production facilities as a means of establishing a global economic base and their own distribution networks.
