In the first part of my talk I would like to concentrate on how establishing the pan-European corridor system has served as a framework for targeted modernisation of the railway network in the EU candidate countries, from the viewpoint of the Chairman of the East-West Task Force of the International Union of Railways (UIC). The UIC East-West Task Force is a special study body which was set up in 1995. One of its main remits is to identify and solve the problems involved in re-integrating the rail-. ways of Europe. Since its inception, the Task Force has tackled a number of the issues involved in achieving that objective and set as one of its main aims to develop and modernise the pan-European railway corridors.
