State of environmental management as practised by UIC member railways

A survey carried out among UIC member Vailways has revealed that practically all railways have already put in place or are currently developing an environmental management system. One of the main justifications given for environmental management is increased legal security and cost savings. The past few years have seen the railways continue to step up their commitment to the environment, with the result that today in both the technical/construction field and the operational/organisational field, a broad range of environmental measures are implemented or at the very least are in the pipeline. Most publish reports as a means of actively communicating their environmental activities to the outside world.
