Opportunities for the railways in the New European legal framework

Ladies and gentlemen, I am grateful for the opportunity to address this assembly in my capacity as Secretary General of the European Rail Freight Association, ERFA. I am sure that most of you are familiar with ERFA: the European association of private and independent freight railway companies. We have 20 direct members and 150 members through national associations. I suggest that we first imagine the future of the European railfreight business, as it might be in, say, 2015, and contemplate how it would ideally look. The idea is not to imagine a Utopia but rather conjure up a vision that we could work to achieve.
