Despite the short delivery times-cale, DfT Rail still sees the decision to bring forward funding from CP4 to allow the earlier procurement of up to 200 DMU vehicles (above) as an opportunity to introduce new suppliers to the UK rolling stock market. At present only Bombardier is offering a suitable product 'off the shelf, the Derby-built Class 172 Turbostar, and DfT Rail's order could be large enough to attract a new entrant to break this monopoly.rnAccording to an OJEU notice dated December 1, the contractrnwill cover the supply of 'between 200 and 250 DMU vehicles and associated services (including maintenance)'. DfT Rail is handling procurement on behalf of a number of franchised TOCs and all the new vehicles 'are expected to be in passenger service by 2012'.
