DfT Rail announced on December 22 that four prequalified bidders had been invited to tender for the 200 new DMU cars announced in the Pre-Budget Report. As predicted in RB1332 (p1), the competition sees Bombardier Transportation facing suppliers from Spain, China and South Korea.rnAccording to DfT, the extra cars are due to start carrying passengers 'by 2012 following negotiations with the First Great Western, TransPennine Express and Northern Rail franchises'. Transport Minister Lord Adonis described the ITT as an 'acceleration of plans for the delivery of these 200 new rail carriages', even though an order for Bombardier Class 172 Turbostar DMUs could see the first vehicles entering service as soon as 2010.
