Jacking error caused Liverpool Street bridge collapse

Transport for London's final report on the bridge collapse which closed London Liverpool Street station to traffic from 19.15 on May 28 until 09.30 the next day (RB1319 p1) concludes that an error in the placement of packing plates under the east end of the new 1 300 tonne span was to blame. The structure dropped by 200 mm, and while the 84 m long Warren truss girder span was itself undamaged, the impact caused five concrete decking sections each weighing around 100 kg to fall onto the Great Eastern Main Line below. A National Express East Anglia service struck the slabs, sustaining minor damage. Built to carry the extended East London Line over the Liverpool Street throat, the span was launched during a closure of the busy London terminus on May 3 to 5.
