Nexus began procurement of an operating concession for the Tyne ft Wear Metro with the publication of an OJEU notice on August 14. The concession will cover station operation plus train operation, maintenance and refurbishment for a seven-year period with an option to extend for a further two years. Under Phase 2 of Metro Reinvigoration (RB1324 p2), a 'three-quarter life' refurbishment is proposed for the original rolling stock fleet. This would extend the service life to 45 years, allowing them to remain in service until 2025. Consultants have estimated the cost of this refurbishment at ￡13m, while the current maintenance regime assumes fleet replacement in 2015-16.
