Shields Junction over-runs by one week

ORR has added Shields Junction in Glasgow to the list of over-running engineering blockades over Christmas that are to be investigated in depth (above). It involved major renewals and reconfiguration of this complex junction at a cost of £9m, as well as forming part of the project to renew signalling controlled from Glasgow Central. Significant changes to the track layout are also required to accommodate 15 min interval non-stop services to be introduced when the Glasgow Airport Rail Link opens. In addition to the short GARL branch from Paisley into the airport terminal, a third track is to be laid on what was once a four-track formation between Shields Junction and Wallneuk Junction, where the Gourock and Ayr lines diverge just to the east of Paisley Gilmour Street station.
