Network Rail announced on September 30 that it had selected a joint venture of Amey Rail and Colas as preferred bidder for a contract to operate and maintain its expanding fleet of high-output track renewal trains and ballast cleaners.rnRunning for five years with a two-year extension option, the framework contract is due to start on January 1 2010 and is likely to be worth around £250m. It will cover the renewal of more than 1 600 track-miles representing 30°/o of NR's planned renewals over the last four years of Control Period 4 to March 31 2014.rnNR deliberately reduced the normal level of track renewals workrnin the first year of CP4 (2009-10) because it believed money could be saved by delaying some of the work until more high-output plant was commissioned. Savings worth £85m from this policy havernbeen identified.
