In 2008-09 Network Rail suffered 747 incidents of cable theft which caused 380 000 delay-min and cost £7.8m in compensation payments to train operators, in addition to the cost of replacement.rnA new type of cable has now been introduced in the hope that it will be easier for British Transport Police to identify following removal from the railway, even when it has been stripped to extract the valuable copper core. The new multi-core cable has larger conductors to carry the standard 650 V signalling power supply in the centre.
