Electrostar Hits Another Snag

Following delivery delays caused by supply chain problems (RB1337 p6), Bombardier has now confirmed that current builds of Electrostar EMUs have encountered a potential structural problem. The item affected is the fabricated transverse beam from which under-floor equipment such as traction packages and auxiliaries are suspended. This welded structure is attached to the underframe of the aluminium bodyshell and contains mounting points for the under-floor equipment Taft. The problem is reported to be associated with weld quality. A Bombardier spokesman told RBI on March 10 that the company was still evaluating the impact of the welding issue. A test and repair specification would probably be developed to minimise the short-term impact on deliveries.
