Network Rail is adopting a staged approach to the provision of the Automatic Train Operation system needed to meet the 24 trains/h throughput in the Thameslink central core reliably (p1). A special meeting of the DfT/Network Rail Joint Programme Board on November 18 2008 approved this strategy under which the new Thameslink EMUs will use ETCS from the start of service running in 2012. In this initial phase, on-train ETCS equipment would interface with the existing safety systems. A Specific Transmission Module would allow the onboard ETCS equipment to read and process data provided by existing Automatic Warning System magnets and Train Protection £t Warning System transmitters. Both AWS and TPWS are driven by the signalling system.
