Work to start on tunnelling academy

Crossrail Ltd announced on October 12 that work is due to start next month on its Tunnelling ft Underground Construction Academy, to be built by VolkerFitz-patrick under a contract worth ￡6m. Located at Aldersbrook Sidings between Manor Park and llford on the Great Eastern Main Line, TUCA is expected to train at least 3 500 people in underground construction skills over the life of the Crossrail project.rnThe construction of Crossrail is expected to employ some 14 000 people at the peak of activity. The main tunnelling contracts should have been awarded in mid-2010, but the failure to achieve that target means that the first boring machine will not start the drivernfrom Royal Oak to harnngdon until the end of 2011, as it typically takes a year to build a TBM.
