A ceremony on May 20 saw Transport Secretary Philip Hammond formally open a ninth platform within the original 1852 station building at London King's Cross, bringing the total to 12 when the suburban platforms 9 to 11 outside the trainshed are included. Platform 0 came into use with the timetable change on May 23.rnThe new platform replaces a roadway where taxis once queued under the Eastern Range, as the offices on this side of the trainshed are known. The platform is 300 m long, and because of the low ceiling that would prevent exhaust fumes from dispersing it should not be used by diesel traction.
