In 2008 there were more than 6 000 suicides in the UK, 3% of which occurred on the rail network. But whereas the national total has been declining, the number of people who deliberately go onto the track to end their lives has been stuck at around 200 annually. This means that four times a week on average a suicide causes significant disruption to train services. This has an obvious impact on performance and costs Network Rail £15m a year in compensation to train operators.
