Container Line OOCL has renewed its contract with Freightliner Ltd for a further 10 years, including a commitment to increase by 50% the number of boxes to be transported. This will see daily services operating between the Port of Southampton and Birmingham, Leeds and Trafford Park. A 'key consideration' for OOCL was Freightliner's investment in rail-mounted cranes and handling equipment at Southampton. VTG Rail UK has signed a 10-year agreement with GB Railfreight to convert a further 21 HYA hoppers to carry pelletised biomass fuel to Drax power station. Currently undergoing conversion by WH Davis at Shirebrook, they will supplement 25 coal hoppers modified to carry biomass. DB Schenker is now operating an additional daily 12-car train for Royal Mail on a trial basis between Willesden and Shieldmuir, carrying traffic that previously moved by air.
