At around 23.39 on July 20 2010, the operator of a road-rail vehicle fitted with a clamshell grab was placing it on the railway on a 1 in 60 gradient three miles south of Inverness on the Highland Main Line. It was a Liebherr A900C ZW type 1033 high-ride RRV. His first error was to lower the rear rail wheels onto the timbers of the road-rail access platform, missing the rails. He then used the clamshell bucket to press down on the ballast between the rails and thus lifted and slewed the flanged wheels onto the rails. When he raised the bucket the RRV started to roll downhill towards Inverness.
