Reading station contractor selected

Network Rail announced on June 9 that it had appointed a joint venture of Costain and Hochtief as preferred contractor to rebuild Reading station. Worth £80m, the contract is one of the largest to be awarded under the £850m remodelling project (RB1391 p4). The contract involves the creation of four more through tracks past two new island platforms on the north side of the station. At present, there are only four platforms with through tracks: 4, 5, 8 and 9 which essentially serve the Down and Up Main (Fast) and Relief (Slow) lines on the Great Western Main Line.
