RAIB investigates Pacer drives

Raib is investigating a potentially serious incident that occurred at around 12.30 on April 10 at Durham station, when a final drive shaft dropped onto the track as a train formed of two Class 142 Pacer DMUs passed through at about 75 mile/h. The train was empty and travelling from Neville Hill depot in Leeds to Heaton depot in Newcastle. The cardan shaft detached at the front end of the third vehicle and was not held in place by retention devices. It damaged the underside of the third and fourth vehicles, piercing the fuel tank on the fourth vehicle and releasing the contents onto the track. A member of the public suffered minor injury from flying ballast.
