ATOC announced on May 9 that the number of passenger-journeys made on the national network 'grew by 4.8% in the first three months of 2011, taking growth oveT the entire financial year 2010- 11 to 6.6%'. It believes 'the rise in the price of petrol over the first three months of the [calendar] year was one of the main reasons' for this strong growth. These are year-on-year comparisons, and are reasonably consistent with the 6.0% increase in passenger-km during the whole of 2010 reported by ORR in National Rail Trends (right). However, ATOC's 'first three months' is actually Periods 10 to 13 of 2010-11 (December 12 2010 to March 31 2011) whereas NRT's Quarter 4 covers January 1 to March 31 2011.
