Wrexham, Shropshire ft Marylebone Railway Company, registered as WSMR (Holdings) Ltd, was in serious financial difficulty almost from the start of open-access operations on April 28 2008, according to documents lodged with Companies House. These show that its demise was being predicted at the end of that year, although it continued to operate trains until January 28 2011 (RB1383 p2). WSMR made a loss before tax of ￡6-3m in the 52 weeks to January 3 2009 and according to the annual report 'the company has continued to incur losses into 2009 and the directors have concluded that going forward the business cannot sustain these losses'. Attempts to transfer the business to Chiltern Railways were already underway.
